The
Luther Trophy The Luther
Trophy is awarded to each season’s winner of the high school football series
between Philipsburg-Osceola and Bellefonte.
The game is typically played the second week of the season each year. Prior to the contest on Friday night, both
teams meet Wednesday night to have dinner together and honor the trophy’s
namesake, Bill Luther. History of the Trophy The
Luther Trophy was started in 1996 to honor Bill Luther, the former athlete
from Osceola Mills and head football coach at Bellefonte. The trophy itself is sponsored by both
school districts and the family of Mr. Luther. In 2007,
the original trophy will be retired and a new trophy will be awarded. The new trophy will be unveiled to both
teams at the annual Luther Trophy Dinner on Wednesday, September 5. The Trophy The original trophy displays the ball from Coach
Luther’s last game. The ball, which
was signed by the members of the team, was on a tee and housed in a wooden
case. The new
trophy will be presented as soon as it is unveiled. The
school that wins the game displays the trophy in their school until the next
meeting. Philipsburg-Osceola displays
the Luther Trophy in a glass case in the lobby at the front of the gymnasium. Series History
Luther
Trophy Series is tied, 6-6. Bellefonte
