History

As the bituminous coal and iron boom of the early 1800’s was ending in eastern Centre County and other industries were beginning to expand (lumber in the mid 1800s, Philipsburg Tannery from 1870-1903 and the brick industry starting in 1890) more people began to settle in the Philipsburg area to live, work and attend school.

Although the town had school houses prior to 1818, Philipsburg began its first organized school 1865.  In 1890, Philipsburg fielded its first football team, along with Bellefonte, Snow Shoe and State College, and was one of the earliest schools to begin playing organized football in Central Pennsylvania.

Osceola Mills, Philipsburg’s neighbor to the south, fielded its first football team in 1914.  Competition between Osceola Mills and other local schools, including a heated rivalry with Philipsburg, continued for 40 seasons.

In 1955, the two neighboring schools merged to form the Philipsburg-Osceola school district and have since competed together as one team.

Today, Philipsburg-Osceola is a member of the PIAA District 6 Class AA, and competes in the Nittany Division of the Mountain Athletic Football Conference.
