History As the
bituminous coal and iron boom of the early 1800’s was ending in eastern Although
the town had school houses prior to 1818, Philipsburg began its first
organized school 1865. In 1890,
Philipsburg fielded its first football team, along with Bellefonte, Snow Shoe
and Osceola
Mills, Philipsburg’s neighbor to the south, fielded its first football team
in 1914. Competition between Osceola
Mills and other local schools, including a heated rivalry with Philipsburg,
continued for 40 seasons. In 1955,
the two neighboring schools merged to form the Philipsburg-Osceola school
district and have since competed together as one team. Today,
Philipsburg-Osceola is a member of the PIAA District 6 Class AA, and competes
in the Nittany Division of the Mountain Athletic Football Conference. |
